An insurance survey is required by underwriters to determine if the vessel is an acceptable risk. The underwriters will be interested in various elements of the vessel including the structural integrity, machinery and auxillary systems. Underwriters will require surveys periodically depending on the age and condition of the vessel. this type of survey also offers clients the chance to rectify any defects before approaching insurance companys for cover.
